2-Ingredient Taste-Safe Cloud Dough

July 20263 min read

Soft, silky, and moldable — this two-ingredient dough is the perfect quick win for hands that want to touch everything.

🖐️

If you've got a toddler who wants to touch everything, this one's for you. Cloud dough (some folks call it moon sand) is soft, silky, and moldable — it holds its shape when you squeeze it and crumbles apart when you poke it. Best of all, it's just two ingredients you already have.

What you'll need

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup vegetable oil or baby oil
  • Optional: a spoonful of cocoa powder, or a drop of food coloring, for color
  • A big bowl or a shallow bin to play in

The magic ratio is 8 parts flour to 1 part oil. Want more? Just keep that 8-to-1 rhythm going.

Let's make it

  1. Pour. Add the flour to your bowl.
  2. Drizzle. Slowly add the oil while you mix with your hands or a fork.
  3. Squeeze test. Grab a handful and press — if it holds its shape, it's ready. Too crumbly? Add a tiny bit more oil, a teaspoon at a time.
  4. Play! Add scoops, cups, cookie cutters, and little toys and let the squishing, molding, and pouring begin.
Why little ones love it: Scooping, pinching, and pressing build the tiny hand muscles they'll use later for holding crayons and scissors — all while it just feels like play.
Taste-safe, not a snack: These ingredients are safe if a curious mouth sneaks a taste, but it isn't meant to be eaten. Always play together and supervise. For a gluten-free version, swap the flour for cornstarch (same 8-to-1 ratio with oil).
